CARDET, within the framework of the “Make the Link” project, delivered training workshops in Cyprus, on the 26th and 27th of November 2014. The workshops targeted the in-service teachers of the Design and Technology course of secondary formal education. The workshops were implemented in Limassol and in Nicosia, and they were attended by 39 teachers. The “Make the Link” project aims at integrating issues around Technology Justice into the Science and Technology curricula of the early secondary classes of the EU member states’ educational systems.

Teachers, at the workshops, had the opportunity to be informed about the Make the Link project, its objectives and its outcomes. Specifically, CARDET presented to the teachers the Design and Technology courses’ units (related to themes such as energy, constructions and materials) that have been developed with the support of the Ministry of Education and Culture of Cyprus. The primary feature of the newly developed units where the contextualization of technology justice and global education through the prosed lesson plan and activities.

The vivid and well-structured discussions that followed gave the opportunity to the participants to express their views and exchange suggestions based on their experiences from the Cyprus educational system, and how such materials could be better integrated in their classes. Furthermore, teachers had the opportunity to work in groups and develop artifacts of the “Power for the World”, “Water for the World”, “Life Bridge”, and “Solar Energy” units.

All the participants were interested in keeping up to date with Make the Link project progress and expressed their willingness to participate in more similar workshops. Also, participants were encouraged to implement the lesson plans in their classrooms, in order to collect empirical evidence in authentic learning environment.
